Best Practices for UTM Template Rule Setup:
- Requiring the use of a UTM Template or enforcing a single default UTM Template can greatly impact the workflow of the members in your UTM.io account. Review the impact of the UTM Template Rule with your account members before activating to prevent workflow slowdown.
- First, start small and with flexibility. Increasing restrictions as needed: Start off by enabling the requirement allowing members to select any UTM template.
- Based on your UTM conventions and UTM governance taxonomy, you might set a default UTM template to be loaded in the UTM
- Test incrementally: Try UTM Template Ruleswith a small workspace before enabling the feature on all of your workspaces
Setting Up The Template Requirement Rule
To configure:
Navigate to your workspace Rules page.

From there, you'll see the UTM Template Requirement Rule

By default, the UTM Template Requirement Rule is off, allowing team members to create links without selecting a template. You can choose from several configurations depending on your goal:
1. Require Template Selection When Building UTM Links
Maintain consistent UTM conventions and attribution reporting by requiring UTM templates, while giving members the flexibility to choose from any template . Enable "Require template selection in link builder" to make templates mandatory. When enabled, team members must select a template before creating a link.

2. Set a Default Template
Save your team time by pre-selecting your most commonly used template, while still allowing them to switch when needed.
Choose a default template from the dropdown, and it will be automatically pre-selected whenever team members open the link builder. This option becomes available after enabling the template requirement.

3. Lock the Default Template
Enforce strict template governance by setting the default template as the only template available Enable "Do not allow members to select different templates" to offer only the default template for all team members.

- Members cannot create links without selecting a template

Default template locked
- The default template is automatically pre-selected and locked
- The template dropdown is disabled
- Members can only create links using the default template

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my workspace has no templates?
- All template requirement controls will be disabled until you create your first template. Once a template is created, the controls become available.
What happens if I delete the default template?
- A warning will appear before deletion. If you proceed, the default template resets to none and member restrictions are automatically disabled. However, the template requirement itself remains enabled.
What happens if I modify the default template?
- Changes to template parameters are reflected immediately for new links. The requirement settings remain unchanged. Existing links are not affected.
Can regular members see these settings?
- No. The template requirement section is hidden from regular members. They only experience the effects in the link builder.
