How to build a UTM In the Web app?

Building UTM Links are integral to tracking your efforts. The UTM link can help tell us where the traffic coming to our site, mobile app store listing or landing pages is coming from. This will allow us to optimize our efforts and see better results. To learn more about what a UTM is or how to use them,  please visit this support article.

In this article, we will learn how to build a UTM link inside of the UTM.io dashboard.

Since the UTM.io dashboard, UTM link builder is the exact same as the  UTM.io Chrome Extension this will be the same process as mentioned in our How to build a UTM link in the Chrome Extension.

Before we think about creating the link, please make sure you have selected the right team and workspace for the link to be saved to. If you are on the wrong team or workspace you will not save the final URL to the right place and you will not see the correct templates. Learn more about how to use teams and workspace here.

To build the UTM link in the UTM.io dashboard you will first need to copy the link to the page you want your traffic to go to. You can do this by copying and pasting the link of the correct page into the URL field on your dashboard, or you can type the link directly into the field.

You do not need to have http:// or https:// on the URL. If your URL does not have one or the other, the dashboard will automatically add http:// to the final URL. However, not all http:// addresses are set up to automatically keep the UTMs on the link if your http:// automatically redirects to https://. To test, try loading the URL on your site at http:// with the UTM attached. If it redirects to https://, make sure the UTM remains on the URL. If it does not, please contact us for support at [email protected].

Once the URL has been entered into the URL field we can now choose to add a template from your templates options. Templates aren’t required, but we recommend them because they help you stay organized when managing multiple UTMs. If you do not have templates already you can create one. To learn more about creating and managing templates please check here.

After you choose to use a template or not you can add your UTMs or modify them. You do not have to fill in all fields, but please refer to your analytics tools as some require the Source, Medium and Campaign to work. If you are unsure of what you should enter into the UTM Campaign Name, UTM Source, UTM Medium, UTM Term or UTM Content  please read this help article .

Once you have filled in your URL and UTM values you can choose to save notes as well. These notes will only be visible if you choose to save your UTM links to the UTM dashboard. Notes make it easy to recall what a UTM was used for at a later time. It is always tough to remember what a UTM was a year later, so taking notes can be very helpful.

Now that we have the full UTM ready to go we can choose to shorten the link using the UTM.io shortener or the Bitly Shortener. You can learn more about how to set these up here.

After deciding whether to shorten the link or not you can also choose to save the UTM Link with its values and notes to the UTM.io dashboard. Simply check the box "Save to Cloud" and we will save the UTM link with datestamp, who created it and all the UTM values for you.

When you have completed all of these steps you will have the final UTM ready to be shared. You can do this in 3 different ways.

The most common is probably the copy button. Once you click the copy button the link will be shortened (if checked), saved to the cloud (if checked) and be copied to your clipboard. All you need to do now is paste it in your intended place.

You can also share your UTM link directly to social media from the builder as well.

Just click on either the Twitter or Facebook button and the link will be shortened (if checked), saved to the cloud (if checked) and then a pop up will open so you can share it. If the popup does not happen please check your Chrome URL bar for a blocked pop-up warning. Click on that and turn off the pop-up blocker and try clicking the share button again.

When the Twitter or Facebook pop-up opens the link will automatically be added to the comment box. Just add your relevant message and hit share and your post or tweet will be tracked in detail.
